Relatives of Missing on a 6-hour demonstration blocking A9…abandoned after Governor’s promise

The relatives of the missing persons held a 6-hour demonstration blocking the A9, but there after the demonstration was abandoned following an assurance by Governor that the President had agreed to meet the Protesters within two weeks.

The struggle of the relatives of the missing entered its 100th day yesterday and the relatives from all districts held a protest demonstration blocking the A9 Highway for 6 hours.

Observation of the 100th day started in front of the Kanthasamy Kovil but later it developed into a attention drawing demonstration with the relatives sitting across the A9, despite orders from the Kilinochchi court to hold their demonstration without hindrance to general public. Police made all attempts to dislodge the protesters to no avail. Some Attorneys at Law who were present at the spot saw that there were no confrontation with the police.

When the District Secretary came with a message from the PM promising to meet the protesters but it was rejected by them saying that no point in meeting  him who had said our children are either dead or gone abroad. Sometime later a letter of the Northern Governor saying the president will meet then in two weeks  was handed over to the protesters who thereafter abandoned the blockade and the traffic resumed normalcy around 4 p.m.
