Release Murukandy Tank immediately, demand area farmers

“The Murukandy tank has been occupied by the Army. They have constructed road through it. For the last six years the yala cultivation has been abandoned.”, accused  the farmers who used to undertake cultivation depending on  the Murukandy tank,

The Divisional Secretary when contacted over this, had said, ” The complaint  had been made to me also. This will be taken up in the Development Council meeting.”

“Earlier we undertook cultivation depending on this Tank. Both Yala and Maha cultivation were done. After the displacement due to war, we were resettled in 2010, but, we could not undertake our livelihood for six years. The basis of our livelihood, the tank is under the occupation of the Army. They have constructed a road across the tank to make easy travelling to Kokkavil camp.

Before the displacement, 60 acre was cultivated under this tank. The Tank is in a depleted and uncared state. Although they have resettled us no arrangements had been for our livelihood.”
