Residence for Army village amidst Tamil people at Navatkuli
Excluding the CM’s request to give the lands in Navatkuli on which Tamil people were living for a long time, to them, activities have been speeded up to construct Army settlement and that, they who were living there were forcibly driven away from the lands, the people said.
The National housing Authority owned 90 acre plot in Navatkuly. Houses for 200 families were constructed on 30 acres. After the war houses were built for people in another 30 acres.17 Land less families built up their dwelling in the balance land. In this context part of this land was allocated to provide lands to Sinhala colonist and for an Army settlement during Mahindha’s government.
Now the Army is trying to take dominance over the lands and had expelled 16 of the 17 families by force Army had prohibited 17th family to put roof over their house and they have made a trapauline cover in a corner of the house and living under it.
The people said that the Army and the Housing Authority had destroyed their houses and threatening to drag them to police station on false complaints.
The CM had written to relevant officials that if there are any land in the said area, to take action to give them to landless people and not to anybody on false context.
