Routine life affected by heavy rains over 15,000 displaced, 374 houses submerged in North
Due to heavy rains with strong winds persisting all over the country for 2 days, the routine life in the North came to a standstill with 15,833 persons belonging to 4,414 families were affected and displaced. Kilinochchi district was the worst affected with 7,249 people were affected.
As per the data received by yesterday evening, from all five districts of the North, large number people are affected by the heavy rains strong winds and resulting floods with 374 houses submerged in flood waters.
Kilinochchi district is the worst affected with 7,249 persons belonging to 2,159 families were affected and 242 persons belonging to 75 families are housed in welfare centres and 934 persons from 274 families are staying in houses of relatives. One house is completely damaged with 106 houses partially damaged . Two are admitted to hospital after being struck by lightning.
5,140 persons belonging to 1,197 families Jaffna district were affected with 3,943 persons from 892 families were affected in Jaffna DS Division. 3 houses were completely damaged and 139 partially damaged.
2,186 persons belonging to 711 families were affected in Vavuniya District where 3 are staying in a welfare centre, 21 houses completely damaged with 55 partially damaged.
1,001 persons from 289 families affected in Mullaitheevu district, 24 persons from 2 families staying in welfare centre with 11 houses completely damaged and 38 houses partially damaged. Further the bund of the Kaddaikaddu Kulam in Odduchuddan had been breached and water is being discharged out.
In Mannar District 257from 58 families were affected and 33 from 8 families had found refuge in relatives’ houses. 47 trawlers were affected in Pesalai due to strong winds and 17 out of them had sunk in the sea completely and 30 partially damaged.7 boats were damaged in Manthai West. Mannar – Puttalam road is inundated.
People in welfare centres are provided with cooked food.Dry rations are to be provided to affected. As the weather conditions are expected to worsen more, all arrangements had been put in ready position to face any disaster, said the officers of the Disaster Management Centre.
