Shortage of seed Black gram (Ulunthu) and farmers disappointed

1,000 Kgs. of seed black gram were distributed by the seed centre of the Office of the Regional Deputy Director, Vavuniya yesterday. However several farmers returned home disappointed  without getting seed black gram.

Vavuniya District produces the highest amount of Black gram in Sri Lanka. Government has banned the import of Black gram so as to develop the economy of local farmers.

The farmers in Vavuniya are encountering difficulties due to the shortage of Black gram and the available seeds being sold at high price. Around 25,000 Kgs of seeds had been distributed already and yesterday’s  issue is the latest in them

However several farmers had to go back disappointed  without receiving the seeds.
