Sumanthiran’s murder attempt suspect assaulted in front of Mother by Prison guard

A suspect in prison relevant to alleged murder attempt on TNA MP,  M.A. Sumanthiran was assaulted by a prison guard in Jaffna,  right in front of his mother. Murugaiah Thavaventhan (33) of Kilinochchi was the prisoner assaulted like this. This mother had complained about the incident to the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission’s Jaffna Branch.

5 former  militants have been arrested last on suspicion of plotting to Assassinate  TNA MP, M.A.Sumanthiran and detained in Anuradhapura prison. Following the suspects complaining at the Kilinochchi Court, they were transferred to Jaffna Prison.

An application had been made in the Jaffna courts for bail on behalf of the above suspects and this mother had come to attend the case and after the case was postponed she had gone to the Jaffna Prison to visit her son.

While she was talking to her son a prison guard had come and assaulted the son right in front of her. The mother started crying and wailing seeing her son assaulted. Other guards had come and stopped the beating and took the prisoner away.

My son had lost a hand in the last war. He looked after me and my husband who are sick. They are going kill my son, the mother had cried out. A prison officer, who came to the spot, consoled the mother that he will take action and send her away. The Mother had gone and complained about the assault to the Human Rights Commission.
