Surveying of SLNS Gotabhaya at Vadduvagal defeated for the fourth time by strong opposition by people

The fourth attempt to survey the SLNS Gotabhaya in order to acquire the land on which the Navy Camp located at Vadduvagal was once again defeated by the strong opposition of the people. The owners of the lands and people joined into hold a demonstration and blockading the road.

The Road blocking commenced at 9.00 a.m. and the Traffic police came to the spot. The people left the road and continued their struggle in front of SLNS Gotabhaya. The Divisional Secretary of Karaithuraippattu, came to the spot and negotiations were held for a long time and finally the surveying was stooped and the people dispersed from the spot.

After the end of the war in 2009, 617 acre lands belonging to the people were disseised by the Navy.  They constructed a large camp there and occupied it. These lands were not released when the people resettled in the area and also even after several struggles, demonstrations and negotiations were held.

The DCC decided that the lands could not be given to the Navy. But the sentry posts were renovated permanently in concrete. Despite the people protesting against the Acquisition, the government gazetted the acquisition of these lands permanently, on 4th August, this year.
