Tamil language has no place in the national anthem of Independence Day

The Sri Lankan government has announced that the national anthem will be sung only in Sinhala language during the Sri Lanka Independence Day celebrations on February 4.

This was stated by the Secretary to the Ministry of Defense Kamal Gunaratne at a press conference held at the auditorium of the Government Information Department today.

The national anthem is played when the President attends the Independence Day celebrations and hoists the national flag, and the national anthem will be in Sinhala only. He said.

Following the election of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as the President in November  2019, the Tamil language was ignored at the Independence Day celebrations in 2020.
