Tamils in danger of being relegated to the 2nd Minority by 2030
The President of the Jaffna Medical Society, Murali Vallipuranathan warned that, in another 15 years Tamils will be relegated to the position of a second minority. Late marriages are rampant in the Tamil society, especially in the Jaffna Society. They are being subjected to continuous affectation of war, denial of re-settlement, non- granting of justice or compensation, and deliberate discrimination. Women are living widowed or without assistance of men, and without any livelihood among military presence, and are in a vulnerable position.
It was found in a research that the average marriage age of a Tamil male is 27.4 years and the female 24.4 years. 89,000 widows are in North and Eastern Provinces. Male : Female ratio is somewhere closer to 3:5 among Tamils, due to deaths in war, being made to disappear, and migration. Tamil Society earlier had more children but now the average had dropped to 2 children.
The percentage of the Tamils which was 11.2% in 2012,is expected to fall to 10.8 in 2021, 10.3% in 2031 and still down to 9.8 % in 20141. The main reason for the interest shown by the foreign states on the problem of the Tamils is the 1st minority status of them. Compulsory sterilizations ( for example, the compulsory sterilization done in Valaipadu and other adjoining villages in Kilinochchi in 2012) and other methods to reduce the Tamil population are being still implemented. No action had been taken against people who perpetrated this crime. Hence the Tamils should be careful, he said.
