Tanks breached in Vavuniya submerging more than 275 acres of paddy cultivations

As a result of the heavy rains that are lashing Vavuniya, two tanks have been breached submerging more than 275 acres lands cultivated with Paddy.

The Purvi cyclone which formed in the Bay of Bengal is lashing Vavuniya with Heavy rains.

Most of the Tanks in Vavuniya North were receiving suddenly increased water intakes and they are expected to spill today.

In this context, due the bunds of the Illuppaikulam and Sampankulam being breached, water expelled had inundated more than 275 acres of paddy and have destroyed them.

It is notable that 245 acres cultivated under Illupaikkulam and 30 acres under Sampan kulam have been destroyed by the flood waters.

Meanwhile, it is reported that the Manthai East and Thunnukkai areas have received rainfalls to the tune of more than 400 mm and been found flooded by rain waters.
