The Jaffna Municipality should take charge of Thileepan’s Memorial at Nallur, insists NPC

Lt. Colonel Thileepan attained a heroic death through a fasting protest with 5 demands against the Indian Army. A memorial for him is located near Nallur back Road. The Northern Provincial Council has requested that the Jaffna Municipality should take charge and maintain this memorial.

It is in context of the identification of a memorial erected for the Killed Indian Soldiers killed in confrontation with the LTTE cadres and arrangements are being made for a Team of high level Indian Army Officers to pay homage at the memorial, the Northern Provincial Council has suddenly put forward this request.

A special sitting of the NPC was held yesterday. The Leader of the House  C.v.K.Sivagnanam put forward a request that the Jaffna Municipal Council should take charge of the ‘Thiyaga Theepam’ (Sacrificial Flame) Lt. Col. Thileeban, demarcate a boundary, clean the area and maintain the memorial.

A letter regarding this was to be sent to the Special Commissioner of the Jaffna Municipal Council. The Leader of the House requested that in the context the CM being also the Minister of Local Government, he should pay attention on this matter.
