Participating as the chief guest in the International Women’s Day Celebration held the Weerasingam Hall, Jaffna day before yesterday, under the aegis of the Women’s Affair division operating under NPC Health Ministry, the CM, C.V. Wigneswaran said that the Government should undertake a research into the requirements of the post war North with the assistance of International Organization and publish a report on it.

This event had been designed to identify the needs of the affected women of the Northern Province and ways and means of alleviating them and hold discussions on how to implement them.

As per the statistics available with us, more than 89,000 women had been rendered widows by the terrible war. Most of them are forced to take up the leadership of their respective families. The Ministry of Women’s Affairs Ministry which undertook a survey of these women studied the social and values related hindrances in undertaking a practical life had identified various types of these women. Women bearing the leadership alone, Women subjected to violence, women being subjected continuous violence, Women with special needs mentally and physically, insecure young girls, former militants, women serving as housemaids abroad and women who do not posses marrying status were identified.

We should study the link between drugs usage and the increase in offences against women. We had to pay special attention of former woman militants. We will continue work for raising their life standards of those who had sacrificed their lifetime for the liberation of their race.

Hence he said that research should be done among theses women and the report published.

Along with the CM, the Srare Minister for Children’s Affairs, Wijekala Maheswaran, NPC Minister of Health, Sathiyalingam,Minister of Education Kurukularajah, Indian Deputy Consular A.Nadarajan, Secretary to the Ministry of Health, S.Thiruvaharan and several other Officers participated in this event.
