TPPs abandon fast following assurance of AG department
14 Tamil Political Prisoners (TPPs) who were on a fast unto death gave up their fast after the Attorney General department assured in court that suitable action will be taken before 23rd this month to file cases against them and to either release them, bail them or release them after rehabilitation.
When these TPPs were produced before the court, the state counsel who appeared for the AG’s Department declared in open court that due action will be taken against the TPPs before 23rd of this month. 4 types of actions will be taken against them. Some of them are to be released. Some others are to be bailed out. some are to be rehabilitated. Cases will be filed against the rest.
Following this the case was postponed till 23rd an when the TPPs returned to Magazine prison, the Commissioner of Prisons who came there, gave them soft drinks and concluded their fast.
Earlier a total 17 TPPs including 2 TPPs in Anuradhapura Prison, against whom no inquiries had been held or action taken, and 15 TPPs including one woman at Magazine were on a fast unto death requesting to release them at least after rehabilitation. Later the TPPs at Anuradhapura Prison gave up their fast after AG’s Department assuring to file cases against them. One TPP was released in his case and the balance 14 continued their fast for an unprecedented 18 days.
