Transgression of Indian Trawlers- No action so far to prevent them, complain the Fishermen
Fishermen of Mulaitheevu have complained that in recent days, the transgression of the Indian Trawlers had increased affecting badly our livelihood, but no action had been taken to prevent them.
In a context where around 5,000 fishermen families are struggling to maintain their livelihood, the Prawn harvesting season had commenced.
However, the Indian Trawlers are destroying them and although this has been complained to the Minister of Fisheries and relevant Officials, no action has been taken so far to prevent them, the fishermen had expressed concern.
The Fishermen said that they are distressed by the loss of livelihood and if this situation will extend further, they will commence a struggle as from 15 of this month.
It is notable that several Indian trawlers were engaged in fishing every day and Night in seas very close to shores of Mulaitheevu and the Navy is taking no action to send them away from Sri Lankan waters.
