University Sinhalese students assault Development Officer: Because National Anthem was sung in Tamil
A Development Officer, Pathakkuddy Suman was admitted to hospital consequent to him being assaulted by Sinhalese University Students at the end of an event held in the Eastern University.
When the National Anthem was sung in Tamil at the end of the event, an Exhibition held jointly by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology and the Divisional Secretariat ofChenkalady, the Sinhalese students were seemed to be agitated.
When Suman came out after the end of the event, he was assaulted by the Sinhalese Students of the University and then they played the National Anthem in Sinhala.
The Police spokesman, Ruwan wanigasooriya said the it had been revealed by their inquiries that the reason for the assault is the problem regarding the National Anthem being sung in Tamil.
It is notable that the present Government had stated that, there is ban in the country to sing the National Anthem in Tamil.
