Unprecedented massing of people in Jaffna: Police use tear gas to disperse crowd

Unprecedented massing of people in Jaffna today in protest of school student  Vithya’s rape and murder. Prison vehicles and police vehicles attacked by angry people.

Hundreds of protesters occupied the centre of Jaffna where  the  Court building is located  in the worst unrest seen in recent years.

On hearing that the suspects are being brought to the Jaffna  Courts , people surrounded the court and attacked the building with stones and prison buses parked in the area. The  police used tear gas shells to disperse the people.

3 policemen are reported injured at about 1.30 pm. Warning shots fired into air .
