Whose is the human remains recovered from within the Jaffna Fort?
Following news items published in the newspapers regarding some human remains recovered in the excavations carried out inside the Jaffna Fort, an officer of the Archaeological Department had speculated that these remains could be from the Portuguese era. The above officer, who wished to be anonymous, said as above when he was asked about the recovered remains.
Currently, excavation works are being undertaken inside the Fort as a joint project by, The Archaeological Departments the Universities of America and Jaffna and Department of Archaeology and Central Cultural Centre.
Evidences of the existence of a Portuguese church had been found at the centre of the Fort. Human bone remains were recovered during the excavations undertaken day before yesterday. We believe that these are remains of some person buried during the Portuguese era , he said.
The find is being examined now and that any could be said only after the examination, he said.
