Wild Life Department gobbling Nanthikkadal also- 5,000 families to lose livelihood

A gazette notification is to be issued by the Government bringing Nanthikkadal also under the Wild Life Department it is reported. Around 5,000 families depending on the Nathikkaldal for throw net fishing will encounter loss of livelihood.

I condemn this act which will drain out the economy of Mullaitheevu, said, MPc, T.Raviharan.

Nanthikkadal plays an important role in fresh water fishing in Mulaitheevu. Around 5,000 families engage in throw net fishing for their livelihood. Catching prawns also is done in this area. Nathikkadal plays the role of tap root of the economy of Mullaitheevu.

In this context, a gazette notification is to be issued by the Government bringing Nanthikkadal also under the Wild Life Department. Through this, the livelihood of 5,000 families will be  very badly affected.

While Mulaitheevu District has been declared as a most poor District of Sri Lanka, this  will push the District into more poverty, it is pointed out.
