World Environment Day of NP held at Erumaiththeevu in Poonakary

The International Environment was celebrated in Kilinochchi yesterday. The said event was held at Errumaitheevu in Poonakary Divisional Secretary’s area.  Several people including NPC Ministers Ainkaranesan and Kurukularajah and NPC member Pasupathypillai, Divisional Secretary – Poonakary and the Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture participated in the event. Trees were also planted during the event.

Addressing the gathering Minister Ainkaranesan said that the Ministry of Environment only exists in name sake. It has no power, staff or responsibilities. Attempts were made to extract lime stone in Kilinochchi and to establish a large scale Tanning Factory. We resisted both attempts. We accepted the PC in the hope of getting the powers. But we don’t need nod our heads for everything the Government says.

Minister Kurukularajah said that he heard loud explosions from the adjoining military camp of a school while participating in the sports meet. The principal informed me that it is a training camps and that the sounds are heard very often. Such camps should be moved away from schools, he said.
