Serena Williams wins the French Open in three thrilling sets — her 20th Grand Slam title
Serena Williams won the French Open on Saturday by beating Lucie Safarova 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 in a match she called “by far the most dramatic” of her Grand Slam championships.
She now has 20 Grand Slam titles, just two behind Steffi Graf on the all-time list for Grand Slam titles in the Open era.
Playing No. 13 seed Safarova, who she’d beaten all eight times they’d played, Williams was up 6-3, 4-1 and serving to make it 5-1 after about an hour of play. NBC sent commentator Mary Carillo from the broadcast booth to prepare to interview her on the court after her victory.
Williams then lost five games in a row and ended up losing the set in a tiebreaker. Williams’ serve, the most powerful in the history of women’s tennis, was failing her. Through two sets, she had 7 double faults to Safarova’s 0. And Safarova played better and better throughout the set.
